So, I’m Kind of a Random Person

As I was walking home from the library and thinking about my upcoming internship this summer, it occurred to me that I’m actually doing really well with one of my childhood goals – maintaining an eclectic resume.

Growing up I just always loved the random, awesome stories people would come out with so nonchalantly.  For example, I remember one time someone mentioned they had lived and worked in Antarctica like it was nothing.

My list doesn’t include anything that cool yet, but I think it definitely is random and not too bad for still being in school.  Here’s a sampling:

  • Soccer and Lacrosse Referee (My first real job. Classic.)
  • The Oregon Zoo (Zoo teens!  I was so tan that summer.  And I got to pet a Rhino.)
  • Intel (I did an internship there in high school for an entire year, and in case you were wondering, I got my fill of cubicles for a lifetime and would prefer to never, ever do it again.)
  • Café Barista at Century Theatres (I loved when people asked how the coffees tasted.  I would reply with facts, like “this one has chocolate in it.”  But my favorite part was making the foam look pretty.)
  • A Travel Magazine (in D.C. last summer. Yep.)
  • The Daily Universe (The best of them all.  Each day in itself can be random)

And the list will soon include being a senate intern.  Sweet.

I think this is one of the reasons I love journalism so much; one day is never exactly like the one before it.

I have to admit, my love of journalism is partly what has driven this, since I really strongly believe you write best about what you know, so if I can have a wide variety of experiences then I can understand more people.  Like after working at Intel I understand the desire to have frequent coffee breaks so much better, and I also understand the stress and fear that surrounds layoffs.  And I better understand people who struggle rounding up sheep?

Here’s a bonus picture of working at the zoo with Kim and Kristin to make this introspective post more fun for you readers.
