3.14

I absolutely detest math. Because of this, you may be surprised to hear that I observe pi day. And that I even look forward to it with great anticipation. This has a simple explanation.

You see, sophomore year I had the great privilege of living with Christy “The Pie” Witt. She happens to be a pie making extraordinaire. So imagine my surprise when March 14th rolled along and she began to make decadent pies of every variety. Once pi became associated with pie, needless to say I became a huge fan.

Today was the first 3.14 I commemorated with a pie I made made myself for our wonderful pi day celebration at the Daily Universe… we celebrate every random holiday (bread day anyone?), and this was no exception! My lunch today consisted purely of lots of different kinds of pie. I made banana cream. Christy would be proud!

So… the picture up top might actually have been the banana cream pie I made for our ward Halloween party. But I’m wearing my favorite hat in this picture. And it’s the same pie I made for today. So it counts.

A Nutritious Meal

Tonight Rebecca had the most wonderful idea – frying candy bars.

Some of them looked like aliens.

But they tasted soooo heavenly.

*Also, I’m sorry I’ve been awful at posting. I thought I finally got into a good rhythm last month… and then it died. My bad. If I could send you a fried candy bar to make up for it, I would.

Caramel Cookie Conquest

But then came the caramel.

Waiting for the chocolate chips to melt. We watched 30 Rock throughout the entire process; it’s an essential ingredient.

Then the chocolate was spread.

And we put it in the freezer to set.

With much patience it was broken…

Now it’s waiting to be devoured! Well, the part that hasn’t yet been consumed by me.

I NEVER cook, by the way, so you should be really amazed by the fact that I have posted about cookies not once, but twice in the recent weeks.

Flavor of Fall

For me, fall means pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.

Actually, I have been known to eat them year round. As anyone who went to Washington Seminar with me should know, since I made some for dinner group and then proceeded to feed the entire building.

But I especially crave them once it gets close to Halloween and Thanksgiving and the changing of leaves. For more on the reason why I am so obsessed, check out Annie’s blog entry from earlier this summer. Let’s just say that ever since London I have been especially appreciative of pumpkin goodness.

Today I made my first batch of the season. If you want some come and listen to this month’s SPJ speaker, Josh Awtry, who is the assistant managing editor of the Salt Lake Tribune and will speaking on the future of journalism and new media. Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Brimhall Atrium on campus (sorry friends not in Utah!). Nice people will be there.

Or I might let you cheat if you stop by my apartment. One batch = 59 glorious cookies. But you better come soon because they will go quick!
